Wind farm Schmölln
The project
The wind farm is located in the Uckermark municipality of the Randowtal. It consists of a total of six wind turbines with a capacity of 20.4 megawatts and a battery storage system with a storage capacity of 3 megawatts. Initially, four wind turbines went into operation in 2017, followed by the two complementary wind turbines and the battery storage facility in 2022. Since then, the Schmölln site stands for Germany's first "wind+storage" project. It was awarded a grant as part of the innovation tender of the German Federal Network Agency.
Supply security and grid stability
The combination of wind energy plants with battery storage ensures that the electricity generated is fed into the grid more consistently, also in times of low wind. Consequently, projects like Schmölln II make an important contribution to greater supply security and grid stability. A total of 28 racks were installed, each with 12 battery module slots, which can generate a total output of 3 MW. Thanks to its intelligent design, the system is intrinsically safe and shuts down automatically in the event of a fault.
